In this lecture, Dr. Wahn introduces the topic of Primary Immunodeficiencies (PID). He reviews the clinical impact abnormal/opportunistic infections have on individuals with PID and also reviews other clinical findings associated with PID. In addition, Dr. Wahn discusses the diagnostic approach for PID and reviews current treatment options.

• Describe “normal” susceptibility to infections; 
• Describe abnormal/opportunistic infections; 
• Review findings in PID other than infection; 
• Discuss basic laboratory workup; 
• Discuss advanced workup in PID centers; and, 
• Review options for treatment.

Professor Doctor Volker Wahn held several professional positions specializing in allergology and pediatric pulmonology prior to his partial retirement in 2014 and final retirement in 2022. His research included the areas of pediatric immunology, infectiology, allergology, rheumatology, oncology, and pulmonology. His training and teaching experience is reflected in this lecture on primary immunodeficiencies.
